Personalised Guidance to Relieve Painful Nipples

Nipple pain is common, but it doesn't mean your breastfeeding journey has to stay that way. A certified 'Advanced Practice' Thompson Method Breastfeeding Educator is certified to gently guide you towards relieving your pain in a 1:1 Fine Tuning Session.

Advanced Practice Educators

An Advanced Practice Breastfeeding Educator understands the principles of Fine Tuning and specialises in relieving painful nipples with gentle guidance, based on The Thompson Method by Dr Robyn Thompson.

International Locations

Although our team of certified Educators are located around the world, Fine Tuning Sessions are held online. Our suggestion is to find someone who provides session times that suit your timezone - day or night.

Flexible

Appointments

We understand that time is of the essence when you have a newborn to take care of and you're in pain. We also understand the importance of helping you relieve that pain to prevent further nipple damage and trauma.

Do You Qualify for a Fine Tuning Session?

Please check the criteria below to ensure that you qualify for a Fine Tuning Session.

We take scope of practice very seriously at The Thompson Method. It's important to understand that a certified Educator is not qualified to assist you with complications other than nipple trauma. If your situation is more complex, a Breastfeeding Rescue with one of our certified Breastfeeding Practitioners may be more appropriate.

What is Fine Tuning?

The aim of Fine Tuning is to receive gentle guidance from an Advanced Practice Thompson Method Educator, to help you and your baby achieve Face to Breast Symmetry, so that you can relieve any pain or discomfort and breastfeed pain-free.

Observation

Your Educator will observe a full breastfeed (over Zoom) so that she can be 'in the moment' with you. Please allow around 60 mins for your session.

(Tip: If using a mobile device, it's handy if someone is with you to hold the camera).

Personalised

You will receive personalised guidance while you and your baby are breastfeeding, based on your unique nipples and breasts. Sometimes the most gentle of adjustments can make the world of difference.

Follow Up

While it's possible that nipple pain can be relieved in the moment, sometimes, it takes a little patience. Included in the fee is 48 hours of follow up guidance from your Breastfeeding Educator.

How is an Educator different to a Practitioner?

Scope of Practice

It's helpful to understand the difference in scope of practice for an Advanced Practice Educator, compared to a Practitioner.

Educator (TMBE, AP)

A TMBE (AP), shares knowledge with pregnant women in preparation for their birth and breastfeeding journey via the Beautiful Breastfeeding Program. She has successfully graduated from the Thompson Method Breastfeeding Academy with Fine Tuning Credentials, being mentored directly by Dr Robyn Thompson and Rachael Austin and the senior Thompson Method team.

Scope of practice also includes providing Fine-Tuning sessions for breastfeeding mothers of healthy newborns (less than 4 weeks) - see criteria above - to assist in relieving painful nipples. Educators may also hold other qualifications including doula, childbirth educator, naturopath, nutritionist, sleep coach, enrolled nurse or lactation counsellors.

Practitioner (TMBP)

A TMBP (Thompson Method Practitioner) is a registered health professional, such as a Midwife, Nurse or IBCLC who is required to provide skilful Assessment of each unique breastfeeding woman and her unique baby, within the Registered Health Professionals individual scope of practice.

A TMBP shares knowledge and experience based on The Thompson Method. A qualified-Registered Practitioner may conduct one-on-one Breastfeeding Rescues to help women overcome breastfeeding complications such as nipple trauma, high volume, breast refusal, transition from nipple shields, breastfeeding before or after oral surgery and many more complications.

FAQs

How much does it cost?

The cost of your session depends on the currency and location of your certified Educator. Pricing is based around $99 AUD, which equates to approximately £49 and $69 USD. If you have any questions around this, please chat with your Educator.

Does my baby need to be ready to feed?

It's preferable that your baby is ready to feed, so that your Educator can observe a full breastfeed. If this is looking unlikely, please reach out to your Educator prior to the session so that you can make arrangements.

What do I need to prepare for the session?

There are a few things you can do to help your session be as successful as possible:

  1. Be in a well lit room with the light in front of you so that your Educator has a clear view (having light behind you makes you a 'silhouette' and difficult to see)

  2. If you'll be using a mobile device, it's handy if you have someone to hold the camera (particularly for an 'over-the-top' view)

  3. If you'll be using a laptop, try positioning the camera so that it is slightly elevated so that your Educator can observe your baby at your breast.

What is an Advanced Practice Educator?

An Advanced Practice Educator has graduated from the Thompson Method Breastfeeding Academy as a certified Educator. She has completed additional hours and a final assessment observed by Dr Robyn and Rachael Austin to ensure that she is proficient in the fine observational skills required for fine tuning, with the aim of relieving or reducing painful nipples.
